Russian bone veneered casket probably from Kholmogory Arkhangelsk (Archangel). Of fretted bone panels laid over mica sheets, backed with coloured foil.
On a pine carcass, hinges and lining paper later.
A bone carving industry has existed since the 17th century in Arkhangelsk, which at this time was immensely important as Russia’s only sea port.
These early 19th century caskets and boxes were probably sold as souvenirs.
In good overall condition with later paper lining.
