A pair of naive Swedish folk art marriage boards mid 19th century

A wonderful large pair of mid 19th century Swedish folk art marriage boards, both with a legend beneath in Swedish.  Undated and unsigned but both obviously by the same artist.

In the first we see the couple on their wedding day, either side of an unusual decorative pillar surmounted by a wreath. They certainly look a relatively prosperous couple, albeit dressed conservatively.

Several years later the couple have flourished.  They have a beautifully presented daughter, and the couple are also dressed in a far more extravagant manner than in earlier years.

There are now two of the decorative pillars, surmounted by highly coloured birds, perhaps denoting lovebirds which are a traditional device in Scandinavian folk art.  The husband appears to be smoking a very elaborate pipe.

Perhaps the decorative pillars were a trademark of this particular local artist. The use of a scrolling ‘C’ is also a traditional Scandinavian artistic device.

Both paintings are of exceptional unfaded colour and framed under glass in their original fine birch frames.

Both of strong body colour on paper with some slight staining and water damage.
