From the back of Janes' miniature
It is so very rare to find a set of miniatures of a complete family painted in the naive fashion so popular in the early to mid 19th century.
And we know who the the names of the whole family, and so very unusually the artist.
On the reverse of each miniature, in pen, top left is written the name of the sitter, and the year painted. On each on the bottom right is the signature of the artist in pencil, with an address of either King Street or Dorset Street (London).
We don’t know anything about the White family, but Mr White is depicted as a respectable well dressed businessman keeping his eye on events with his newspaper in hand. Poor Mrs White, is depicted in smaller scale. Poor woman, ran the house, gave birth to 4 daughters and yet gets the smallest image!
The artist, of whom we know more was Caleb William Wing.
Caleb William Wing, English, 1801-1875, was a Victorian artist who is remembered as a talented miniaturist, and copyist in the field of illuminated manuscripts and Renaissance-era miniatures.
He worked in Brighton from 1826 to 1829 and ran a drawing class in Western Road. From 1845, he also worked for the British Museum as a copyist of illuminated manuscripts, and was active as a portrait miniaturist and painter in London on King and Dorset Streets. It was at these addresses, as marked in pencil on the reverse of each, that the members of the White family had their portraits painted a period of years.
Wing also created many lithographs, portraits, and illustrations for zoological publications during his career.
The miniatures are in lovely condition, beautifully painted, of great unfaded colour, with few blemishes; Just the odd age spot as can be seen on the photos.
In original ebonised frame and glass with minor impurities. With replacement acid free mount and backing board.
