A piece of company promotional material from 1889. Some things never change.
It's a fascinating thing. Transfer printed with the company name, a calendar for 1889 on both sides of the handle, and on either side of the blade the telegraph routes operated across the
world.
The modern Cable and Wireless company formed in the early 20th century, can trace its history back to a number of British telegraph companies founded in the 1860's. Through mergers and
acquisitions the Eastern Telegraph Company eventually ran cable all over the world, extending eventually to Australasia and China.
The Government eventually became involved and a number of
companies using radio communications, including Marconi, were merged to form the Imperial and International Communications Ltd in 1928 and into Cable and Wireless in 1934.
It's surprising what you learn when you buy unusual things!
In great condition for its age.
