A wonderful, and not at all depressing, large and highly decorative Swedish naïve, folk art family memorial board, signed and dated lower right 1865. Rather more a celebration than a memorial.
Here there are colourful trees and flowers, pillars and decoration, memorialising a much loved family. There are prancing deer and motifs of agricultural life.
Sadly the children, a boy and a girl, died aged only 7 and 10 years old. A poignant reminder of child mortality in the nineteenth century. The parents died shortly before this
memorial was painted in 1863 and 1864.
This watercolour painting retains its exceptional colour with a little water staining and damage to the extremities.
Framed under glass in a fine birch frame with ebonised corner sections.
