I don't usually buy portraits of old ladies, but this little old lady has something really nice about her.
Her name was Marguerite ? Madeleine Parigot, born in Paris 16th November 1785, married 13th May 1808 to Louis Nicolas Cau? .......
died? November 1848
(She) died 25th February 1875 (age 90).
I would therefore estimate that this portrait was painted about 1870 when she was about 85. A good age now, let alone then.
Just think what a century she lived through in France, Revolutions and wars throughout her life, No wonder she looks wise and philosophical.
The information is taken from a paper inscription pasted to the back of the stretcher, now difficult to decipher is places.
Also written directly onto the wood of the stretcher are a few words, which I understand as being a tribute to her, and saying lovely lady she was to the end.
In a simple gilded frame.
