A large and fabulous naive still life of fish and fruit. Oil on canvas. Late 18th early 19th century, possibly Portuguese.
Unsigned, as far as I can see, but painted by a competent artist although one untrained in the art of perspective. And this is where the charm lies
for me.
The table slides uncomfortably forward, the grape basket lacks weight and appears to hover, and the fish, a grouper perhaps; has he just flown onto
the table or is he falling off? All set in a dimly lit kitchen.
Relined in the 20th century.
With a very attractive grain to the oak frame.
