'My claims of your patronage, Ladies and Gentlemen, I trust are indisputable ....  having been employed for the last thirty years in collecting the most valuable and scarce Literary Publications of the Ancients, to adorn your Libraries.  I was also concerned in suppressing and causing to be condemned to the Flames the Works of that all levelling traiter Tom Paine.'
