Naive Provincial Genre Scene, Georgian period Ireland
Georgian Ireland – Naive Provincial Genre Scene
An interesting townscape, probably early 19th century Ireland, with the town crier, a solider in full uniform with his wife, towns folk going about their
business and crippled men on sticks, probably injured in war.
Signed J. Thompson, on the wheelbarrow lower right, in a dark oak frame with gold slip.
Early 19th century oil on canvas
On the reverse an old label from Combridge Art Dealers, Duke Street, Dublin, and an old typed label which reads:
‘Circa 1820 rare and interesting Genre scene in the naive manner – highlighting a uniformed officer of the British Army and
surrounding rural townsfolk, possibly in Georgian Ireland.
Signed J Thompson, Px. Original canvas and stretcher. 12” x 18”’
